Sri Lanka is my birth land. I migrated to Melbourne in 1983, after the first major riots in Colombo. The civil war (which lasted 30 years) ended in 2009. However, there is little peace in the country. Buddhism has a wonderful heritage in Sri Lanka as it has been the state religion for thousands of years. However, the Buddhist establishment and extremist monks play a central role instigating violence and discrimination against other ethnic / religious group e.g Tamils, Christians & Muslims. In other news, Sri Lanka is a paradise and loves tourists.
Especially English ones! It's a beautiful, verdant, friendly and colourful country with great food. The people are remarkably hospitable and generous.
